Avon Gorge Cruises on The Matthew

Following a disappointing 2025 season when we were unable to get out on the river due to the essential repair works on the outer lock gate at Cumberland Basin, we are hoping to be able to run the Avon Gorge Cruise during our 2026 sailing season. However, we are currently waiting for confirmation from the harbour authority that the lock is fully operational.

As soon as we know we can get in and out of the harbour safely, we will release our 2026 dates for a cruise down the Avon. We know how much you love this trip (as do we!), and will share updates as soon as we have them.

Please keep an eye on our trips timetable and our social media for all new trip announcements. You can also subscribe to The Matthew newsletter to be the first to find out all our latest trip news and get alerted when tickets are on sale!

GIFT VOUCHER HOLDERS: If you have an unredeemed Avon Gorge Cruise voucher that expires between July 2025 and May 2026 and you haven’t heard from us, please email Sarah in The Matthew office at info@matthew.co.uk with your voucher code to arrange an extension or to use the credit for one of our other trips.

2026 DATES TO BE CONFIRMED

A three to four-hour trip down the River Avon - look out into the river through one of the deepest locks in the world! We leave Floating Harbour through Junction Lock, then sail down the river under the Clifton Suspension Bridge and along the Avon Gorge to Pill and back.

These trips are tide-dependent, so we can only offer a limited number of trips each year – early booking is very strongly advised!

Trip FAQs

  • How long is the Avon Gorge Cruise?
This trip is between 3-4 hours long. This includes a short wait at Junction Lock, both on the way out and on our return. The Harbour Master operates the lock only when it is safe to do so – this is not in the control of The Matthew or the captain. Your patience is appreciated.

  • How much does it cost?

Visit our Ticket Prices page for all current ticket prices.

  • Are group bookings available?

Yes, we allow group bookings of up to 10 people on all of our public trips.

If you are planning a trip for a larger group, we offer private hire for parties of 11 or more people. See our Private Hire page for more details about what we can do for you.

(Please note that we are unable to run the Avon Gorge Cruise as a private hire option.)

  • What does my ticket include?
The ticket price includes a round trip from our Princes Wharf mooring, taking you through Bristol’s historic harbour, down the River Avon to Pill and back.

  • Is commentary included?

This trip does not include commentary. However, you are invited to ask our knowledgeable and friendly volunteer crew any questions you have whilst on your trip – they love to talk about The Matthew, John Cabot and local maritime history!

  • Can I get something to eat on this trip?
Food is not served on this trip, but you are welcome to bring your own snacks to enjoy on your trip. There are also open areas around the harbourside where you will be able to enjoy a picnic either before or after your Harbour Trip. There are also a multitude of cafes, bars and restaurants in the area.

  • Can I buy a drink?

Yes, you can. Our licensed cash-only bar will be open for the duration of the trip, serving a selection of beer, wine, cider, soft drinks and hot drinks.

Please note: The ship does not have the facility to accept card payments on board, so please bring cash if you’d like to purchase a drink!
