Private Hire Trips ON THE MATTHEW

The Matthew is available for private hire from Tuesdays to Sundays between April and October.

Where will we sail?

Your private hire trip on The Matthew will take you on a voyage around Bristol’s historic Floating Harbour.

The Matthew will take you on a round trip of Bristol's historic Harbour, taking in the sights and sounds as we set off from our mooring at Prince’s Wharf* and sail between Prince Street Bridge and Junction Lock.

If you choose a catered trip, the ship will moor up at the Pumphouse Landing (at Junction Lock) part-way through your trip for you and your guests to enjoy your food.

During the trip, you are free to wander around the main deck – there are some excellent vantage points from which to take photos!

At the end of the trip, we’ll return to our Princes Wharf mooring to disembark.

*Static hires will remain at our Princes Wharf mooring for the duration of your hire period.

Additional information:

  • The latest start time for all evening trips is 5pm during spring/summer. However, low light due to earlier sunset times in the autumn can present a safety issue, so late afternoon/early evening trips are scheduled accordingly.

  • All private hire trips take place within Bristol Harbour and do not provide views of Clifton Suspension Bridge.

  • The Avon Gorge Cruise is not available as a private hire trip.

  • Please be aware that The Matthew is an open-air, outdoor venue. As there is very little cover from the elements when on board, passengers are advised to dress for the weather conditions on the day.

  • Your private hire will still go ahead if it is raining or overcast, so please be sure you read our booking terms and conditions before going ahead with your booking.

  • The ship is closed on Mondays throughout the year.

Top tips for enjoying your trip, whatever the weather!

We want everyone to enjoy their time on board, so when you come for your trip on The Matthew, here are a couple of things to consider about the conditions on board:

  • The Matthew is an outdoor venue with very little cover or protection from the elements. As it is an open, uncovered ship, you will have a much better time if you are dressed for comfort according to the weather – bear in mind that you will be more exposed when out on the water.

  • It can feel colder than it does on the quayside if it's windy, and more exposed to the sun if it's sunny. We recommend you cover all eventualities and consider bringing an extra layer, waterproofs, a hat and sun protection on your trip! In the event of rain, we do have large umbrellas that you can use.

    The Captain's recommendations:

  • In warm and sunny weather: bring sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and an umbrella for a bit of shade!

  • If it's raining: wear a waterproof coat (and trousers, if you have them!), and bring an umbrella.

Corporate Hire

Whether you want to treat your staff or impress your clients, The Matthew provides a unique venue for your works night out, VIP hosting or team building event.

We enjoy working with companies both large and small and have hosted a variety of events including catered harbour trips, quayside champagne networking events, teambuilding sessions, and even corporate family fun trips!

The Matthew is ideally located in central Bristol, near the city’s major hotels and all that it has to offer in the way of entertainment to enjoy before or after your time on board.

FILMing, PHOTOShoots & FESTIVALS

The Matthew is a popular location choice for film and television productions – there simply isn’t another ship like it!

The Matthew is available for hire for film and television work and is also a fantastic location for your photo shoot. The ship is also available to take part in maritime and arts festivals in the UK and beyond.

Our captain and crew are highly experienced in their knowledge of Bristol Harbour and the surrounding area and can work creatively with you to make sure setup and filming run smoothly. They’ve also been known to get involved as extras for some of the productions filmed on board!
