Visit Bristol Harbourside
Making the most of your day
Is there anything better to do than take a stroll around Bristol Harbourside on a sunny day? Or even on a miserable day! If you have some time before or after your trip on The Matthew, or you've been exploring the ship as part of your wander around the quayside, here are a few ideas of other things to keep you entertained...
Floating Harbour
The Matthew out of the water for maintenance on the slip at Underfall Yard.
Several other maritime attractions are within easy reach of The Matthew – we're right next to the M Shed museum and just a short walk from the SS Great Britain.
For further exploration of Bristol’s maritime heritage, head on down to Underfall Yard, a bit further along the quayside. Here, you can have a look around the working boatyard, explore the history of the Floating Harbour in the Visitor Centre and enjoy some refreshments at the Underfall Cafe.
Places to eat and drink
The Matthew sailing past the Arnolfini on an early evening cruise.
If you're hungry or fancy a bit of liquid refreshment, there are plenty of places to eat and drink right on our doorstep at Wapping Wharf – home to CARGO, which boasts a host of independent eateries, shops and more made entirely of converted shipping containers. Carry on along the Harbourside and you’ll find the specialist coffee shop New Cut Coffee, tapas bar and restaurant The Olive Shed and Brunel’s Buttery, where you can sample one of Bristol’s most famous bacon sandwiches while sitting on the quayside!
We are also a stone’s throw away from the Arnolfini (where you’ll find Stephen Joyce’s larger-than-life bronze statue of John Cabot looking out across the harbour in the direction of The Matthew), the Watershed, and all the bars and restaurants located in and around Millennium Square.
Other activities
Cabot Tower at Brandon Hill, Bristol.
Just across the river, Millennium Square isn’t just about bars and restaurants, it’s also home to popular family attractions including We The Curious and Bristol Aquarium.
And if you fancy relaxing in the tranquil surroundings of nature and wildlife, head on over to Brandon Hill, home to Cabot Tower – built in 1897 to commemorate the 400-year anniversary of John Cabot and The Matthew’s transatlantic voyage in 1497.
You can find out more about the wealth of activities that Bristol has to offer on the Visit Bristol website.
