Other news...

Due to circumstances outside of our control, our maintenance programme has been somewhat delayed over the winter. If you're down at the harbourside over the next week or so, you'll notice a big Matthew-shaped hole at our usual mooring. Instead, you'll find us at Albion dry dock (by the SS Great Britain) - we're out of the water from this weekend for our annual inspection and to carry out maintenance in the areas we can't usually reach...

We'll also be getting our newly refurbished mast and crow's nest reinstated!

Opening hours

As we will be in dry dock, this unfortunately means that we won't be open to visitors for a couple of weeks. We are aiming to be back at our mooring and open to visitors by the weekend of April 9th. Please visit our website and social media for updates.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard when all the works have been completed!

The Matthew Team

Some of The Matthew volunteers varnishing the mast before it gets put back into place.

Some of our dedicated volunteers varnish the main mast in preparation for it being returned to the ship!

Fashioned from a 75-foot Douglas fir, the mast was originally lowered into place back in 1996. It's now undergone a complete refurb by our friends at Noble Masts, ready for our 25th anniversary year.

May Bank Holiday Weekend Festivities

The Matthew of Bristol Trust has a weekend of anniversary celebrations planned for the early May bank holiday.

Our trustees and volunteers have been working very hard behind the scenes to bring you a taste of Tudor Bristol with music, activities and special guests on Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May. It will be free of charge to visit and have a look around, so do come on down and see what we’re up to.

We’ll also be running trips around the harbour in the mornings – you can book your tickets in advance right here...

Matthew of Bristol

The Matthew that you see in Bristol today is a modern reconstruction of the original Matthew that John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland in 1497. It is a much-loved part of Bristol’s maritime heritage with a busy schedule of public boat trips, film and festival work, corporate and celebratory events.
